Things you can do that will help you breathe easier
Do you remember when you were a kid, how your home would smell a bit funky when the furnace got turned on for the first time in the fall? The reason for that burned, strange smell is simple.
Your parents likely didn’t remember to have the ducts professionally cleaned.
If you don’t dust your home, you’ll eventually notice a buildup off the dust on your tables, chairs, and shelves. And, as you can imagine, your ducts collect all sorts of unpleasant things including but not limited to dust, pet dander, spider webs, pollen, mold spores, etc.
Suffice to say, having your ducts professionally cleaned can do wonders for the air quality in your home. If this is neglected, all of those contaminants will be blown through the air vents (and into rooms throughout your home) every time you turn the furnace on.
Most experts recommend having your air ducts cleaned by a professional on an annual basis. In between those cleanings, you’ll want to clean the wall and/or floor air vents twice a year- once in the spring and again in the fall.
Don’t forget the air filter
We have written countless blog posts about the importance of keeping your HVAC air filter clean. If you’re not checking (and inspecting) your air filter on a monthly basis, you should be. When you inspect the filter, you’ll want to remove it from your HVAC and hold it up to the light. If you can see through it, you’re good to go. If you can’t see through it, it’s time to swap it out.
Many homeowners prefer to buy several air filters at the same time and keep them stored in a basement, closet or the garage. This way, they’ll have one on hand if they determine its time for a change.
